We know we gush about Bellingrath Gardens and Home on the regular, but we can’t help it. Southern hospitality and history meet unparalleled beauty in one charming spot, and we secretly want to live there. Since taking up residence isn’t an option, we’re thinking we’ll just spend as much of the spring there as possible. Lucky for us, the April schedule is chock full of events worthy of a visit.
- All April Long: Rose Bloom Out
Tour the award-winning Bellingrath Rose Garden during its first bloom, which features more than 2,000 plants representing many of the best varieties to grow on the Gulf Coast. The roses will continue to bloom through fall, but the folks at Bellingrath predict that the next full bloom out will be in June. For peak blooming times, check out the Rose Watch at bellingrath.org beginning in mid-April.
- Saturday, April 1: 24th Annual Camellia Classic Open Car Show
Enjoy a display of hundreds of vintage and classic automobiles on Saturday, April 1, as Bellingrath Gardens and Home hosts the Mobile Bay Mustang Club’s 24th Annual Camellia Classic Open Car Show on the Great Lawn.
It’s all for a good cause, too; proceeds from car registrations will go to Feeding the Gulf Coast (formerly Bay Area Food Bank) and the Autism Society of Alabama. Admission is $13 for adults and $7.50 for children. Tickets may be purchased at the Gardens. To register a car, visit the Mobile Bay Mustang Club’s website, mobilebaymustangclub.org.
- Friday, April 7: 85th Anniversary of Bellingrath Gardens
Celebrate the 85th anniversary of the date that the Gardens first opened to the public! On April 7, guests may visit the Gardens at a special anniversary rate of $8.50 per person. Members of the Friends of Bellingrath will receive a 20% discount in the Gift Shop.
The Magnolia Café will serve a special “Belle Camp” fish-fry lunch with fresh catch from the area in honor of Walter Bellingrath’s 1918 purchase of his Fowl River fishing camp, which eventually became Bellingrath Gardens and Home. Guests will also receive a free piece of birthday cake with their lunch purchase. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, April 8: Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast with the Easter Bunny
Hop on down to Bellingrath for a morning of Easter fun with the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast with the Easter Bunny! Thousands of Easter eggs will be scattered across the Great Lawn for children to collect, and there will be plenty of candy and treats for little ones to fill their Easter baskets. After the egg hunt, families are encouraged to enjoy other Easter activities within the Gardens.
Registration is required for the Breakfast with the Easter Bunny; to register, call 251.973.2217. Admission to the Easter Egg Hunt is $13 for adults and $7.50 for children ages 5-12 will be charged. Children ages 4 and younger are always admitted free.
- Sunday, April 16: Easter Sunrise Service
As the sun rises over Bellingrath Gardens and Home on Easter Sunday, guests are invited to a special Sunrise Service on Live Oak Plaza. The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. and is open to everyone in the community. There is no admission charge. A limited number of chairs will be set up and guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs. After the service, breakfast will be available for purchase in the Magnolia Café. In the case of inclement weather, the service will be moved indoors into the Magnolia Café.
