Blenheim Ginger Ale, Hammer, SC

Local ginger ale with a kick

by Laura Barnett | September 07, 2010

Go ahead and pick up a case of Blenheim Ginger Ale when visiting the Grand Strand, because after one sip no other ginger ale will ever compare. I fell in love with Blenheim ginger ale over two decades ago before I was lucky enough to be a local. I am almost positive more than one trip to the beach was for the sole reason of acquiring another case of this fiery delight. I am not the only person with an allegiance to Blenheim. The drink claimed a cult following when magician Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) wore a Blenheim T-shirt on the cover of Wired Magazine in 1994 and a fan shrine keeps addicts informed with every mention of their beloved drink.

The Southern Food writer John T. Edge once described Blenheim to ''a slap in the face from a spurned lover.''  He is absolutely correct. This is a ginger ale that must be sipped. Bottled in Hammer, South Carolina, the concoction is a mix of spring water and ground ginger root. Currently Blenheim is the oldest continuous independent soda bottler in the world.Blenheim can be purchased in Old # 3 Hot- Red Cap (the boldest flavor), #5 Not as Hot-Gold Cap (milder but still hot), and #9 Diet-White Cap (for those watching their waistlines). All flavors are also delicious as a mixer with your favorite libations.

Myrtle Beach Insider’s Tip: Occasionally Blenheim can be difficult to locate even on the Grand Strand, the Piggly Wiggly and South of the Border are almost always in stock. I also suggest Old #3 as a remedy for sinus issues!
