If you love films without all the Hollywood glitz and glam, mark your calendar for February 18-20, 2011, and plan to be in Louisville for the third annual Derby City Film Festival.
There probably won’t be any limousines pulling up in front of the Clifton Center for this event. You won’t see starlets in sequins or famous producers in Armani suits promenading the proverbial red carpet. But what you will find is a serious film festival for serious film lovers.
Among a flurry of festivals that have cropped up in Louisville in recent years, the Derby City Film Festival distinguishes itself by focusing on true independent films and filmmakers, rather than celebrities and hype. According to its website, the festival wants to prove that quality films do not have to have multi-million dollar budgets. Since the inaugural year in 2008, the DCFF has been host to more than 30 U.S. and world premieres, including five local films.
Screenings and other 2011 festival activities will be held at the Clifton Center at 2117 Payne Street. The three-day event will include panels and workshops led by actors, writers, directors, and others in the film industry.
Tickets start at $6 for individual screenings. Ticket information is available at www.derbycityfilmfest.com/ticketinfo.htm.
In addition to feature films, the festival showcases documentary, animated, student, experimental, international, and other film categories. Filmmakers interested in submitting their work will find details online at www.derbycityfilmfest.com/submissioninfo.htm.
