College towns provide many amenities, but in the South most people focus on all things football or basketball. Let's think outside the box for a moment. College campuses are also alive with creative artists and musicians and the students who love them.
At the University of Alabama, this creative spirit has been channeled into the first annual Druid City Arts Festival. A product of the Creative Campus initiative, this one-day art and music festival will take place March 27, 2010 in the City Fest lot in downtown Tuscaloosa. Between the hours of 2 and 9 p.m., visitors can enjoy regional music and local artists, as well as food and drink and children's activities.
To top it all off, there is an after party, a sort of pub crawl, if you will . A $5 wristband garners access to five of downtown Tuscaloosa's music venues: Little Willie's, Innisfree, Egan's, The Booth, and Brown's Corner. Featured bands include, Act of Congress, Taylor Hollingsworth, and other regional acts. Proceeds from the sale of wristbands benefit the Tuscaloosa Arts Council's small grants program.
A student-conceived and -driven festival, the Druid City Arts Festival has partnered with Tuscaloosa's Small Towns and Downtowns, the Black Warrior Storytelling Festival, and Tour de Tuscaloosa to culminate in a weekend filled with much to do in and around downtown Tuscaloosa. Stay tuned and you just might hear something about these other events taking place this same weekend in March. Who says March Madness is only about basketball?
