Every city needs its undiscovered Mexican joint. The one that’s tiny, crowded, with hole-in-the-wall charm. Where the drinks flow, the tacos crunch and the attitude is no-frills. You’d like to rave about it to your friends, but then again, maybe it should just remain your little secret.
Meet El Mundo.
Since its debut in 1995, El Mundo has been a Louisville favorite – to those who know about it. The fare is a self-described “twisted version of authentic Mexican food.” (Think: black beans instead of refried, red rice instead of white.)
The El Mundo menu is extensive, and portions are large. For starters, this Insider recommends The Dippity Do – a sampler platter of fresh salsa, bean dip, tomatillo salsa, guacamole and chips ($6.25).
From there, choose your entrée. Burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos; chile rellenos, tamales, fajitas and carnitas. This Insider’s favorite items include:
Thirsty now? You’re in luck. El Mundo’s house margarita was voted Best Margarita in town by Louisville Magazine in July 2011.
El Mundo is located in Louisville’s Crescent Hill neighborhood, at 2345 Frankfort Avenue. There are three separate eating areas. Downstairs (main entrance and sidewalk tables) is first come, first serve. Order at the counter and listen for your name. Upstairs (look for the outdoor staircase on the right side of the building) is normal table service. The backyard patio (accessible via the ramp on the right side of the building) also offers normal table service.
El Mundo is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit 502elmundo.com or call (502) 899-9930. Check the El Mundo Facebook page for special closings, daily specials and more.
