Flame Run Presents Recycled Objects Glass Artist Sungsoo Kim, Louisville, KY

See beautiful glass sculptures made with Styrofoam molds

by Bobbi Buchanan | February 03, 2011

Sungsoo Kim turns trash into treasure in a most unusual way. The Cleveland artist uses discarded Styrofoam packaging and other recycled consumer and industrial products to make the molds for his sculptures. A show at Louisville’s Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery features work from Kim’s “Rediscovery” series, which was inspired by packaging from a computer purchase. The series consists of vividly colored kiln-cast glass sculptures.

Born in South Korea, Kim is a graduate of the glass program at Kookmin University in Seoul. He came to the United States in 2006 to study at Pilchuck Glass School and earned a master of fine arts at Kent State University in 2008. His awards include Best of Show at the 2009 BIGG: Breakthrough Ideas in Global Glass in Columbus, Ohio.

One of the artist’s most important roles is revealing the hidden value of an object, Kim says. “By framing the object in a new way, the artist can challenge viewers to rethink the value of everyday objects and encourage them to find aesthetic pleasure in the most seemingly mundane places.”

The solo exhibit runs February 4 through March 25 at Flame Run, which is located downtown at 828 E. Market Street. An opening night reception begins at 5 p.m. on First Friday Trolley Hop night with a demonstration at 7 p.m.

The gallery’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free. For more information, go to www.flamerun.com or call 502-584-5353.
