Memorial Day weekend is coming up soon! One of the best parts about Auburn is that you don’t have to go far to go on a “vacation.” Auburn visitors and residents alike enjoy going to one place to celebrate Memorial Day: Lake Martin.
Load up the hot dogs, the grill, the floats and the sunscreen and head up Highway 280 to get to fun in the sun. Nothing says Memorial Day better than sparklers and grilled food by the side of a beautiful lake.
Lake Martin is only 30 minutes away from Auburn so it’s perfect for a weekend getaway or just a day time trip. Along the lake you’re sure to find great food in restaurants such as Niffer’s Place and Oskar’s Café.
While there we recommend going to Acapulco Rock (I originally thought this was Chimney Rock, but John Coley's video, below, set me straight). Even if you’re too scared to jump off (like me), you can have a great time watching other people take the plunge. Thrill seekers jump off the rock from about 60 feet into the water. And it’s a thrill to watch.
And if you want to go out at night there are plenty of places to go too! There are plenty of place to wet your whistle and even great places to listen to good music. The Lake Martin Amphitheatre will be playing great tunes by the southern rock band Blackberry Smoke on Memorial Day. For more things to do at Lake Martin, check out The Corner News.
The temperature in southern Alabama is heating up and we all need a break from it. Right now nothing sounds better than relaxing on a float in the cool water or jumping off of a rope swing into chilly water. So take a break this memorial day and bring your friends and family to Lake Martin.

By the way, that picture is actually Acapulco Rock, not Chimney Rock. Chimney Rock is the one with the rope swing on it, but it’s a common mistake and perfectly excusable! Here is a video of me showing the different ones:
