If you think Decatur’s Point Mallard Park is only about water of the liquid kind, you’re missing out. The park also has water of the frozen variety—the indoor rink is open year-round and admission is just $6. Skate rental is $2.
Can’t stand up on the ice on those thin skate blades? No problem. The Point Mallard Ice Complex is celebrating its 10th anniversary and National Figure Skating Month with a free skate lesson on Jan. 16 at 10:30am. Participants will start with an off-ice orientation, then move to group lessons. Demonstrations by local skaters will take place, and a free skate session will close out the morning. Call 256-341-4913 to reserve your spot or email Charles. Lessons are open to ages 4 and up.
Point Mallard also offers free skating, no admission and no rental fees, on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4-6 p.m.
Regular public session schedule:
Wednesday-Friday, noon-2:30 p.m.
Friday, 7- 8:50 p.m.
Saturday, 3- 4:50 p.m. and 7- 8:50 p.m.
Sunday, 2- 4:30 p.m.
Call 256-341-4915 to check that the session is still open as conflicts with planned events sometimes arise. You can also check the online calendar.
If you plan to take lots of laps around the rink, consider an annual skate pass for $100. Call 256-341-4915 for more information or email Nita.
Happy skating!
