Every October, Louisville proudly plays host to one of the country’s preeminent outdoor art festivals. Set against the backdrop of Old Louisville’s tree-lined streets and Victorian-era homes, the St. James Court Art Show® has been connecting artists and art lovers for over five decades.
The 2011 show will be held Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2. Over 750 artists from across North America will be featured, and over 300,000 visitors are expected. As always, the event is free and open to the public.
The first St. James Court Art Show® was held on October 12, 1957. The St. James Court Neighborhood Association (one of the oldest in the nation) had recently completed renovations on its beloved 1892 fountain and was facing rising debt. In order to generate funds, they decided to host a small art exhibit.
Fifty-four years later, the fountain is still there—and so is the art show. Today’s show has grown into a juried fine arts and crafts show and has expanded to include a total of five neighborhood associations and one church.
At the St. James Court Art Show®, visitors can browse booths showcasing paintings, photography, portraits, ceramic, clay, clothing, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, sculpture and more. Prices range from the very cheap to the very expensive.
Attendance is also a lesson in Victorian-era history. Plaques point out notable residents and describe the history of the neighborhood.
The art show takes place rain or shine. This year’s hours are Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a. m. - 5 p.m. Pets and bicycles are not allowed.
St. James Court is approximately 3 miles south of downtown Louisville, and various parking options are available. Before going, see the festival’s extremely handy parking map for information on designated lots, rates, street closings, shuttles and valet parking.
