If you are a Tar Heel basketball fan, the Carolina Basketball Museum is a must-visit. (Full disclosure: I'm a UNC alum and a huge fan). Located on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus on the first floor of the Ernie Williamson Athletics Center, the museum is a tribute to all things Carolina basketball. The Williamson Center is adjacent to the Smith Center and Koury Natatorium on Skipper Bowles Drive.
The museum is open to the general public Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
When you first arrive at the museum, your experience will begin with a six-minute theater presentation, with video tributes to Carolina Basketball history, Michael Jordan, Phil Ford, Tyler Hansbrough, and Coaches Dean Smith and Roy Williams. The video also includes interactive presentations of the Tar Heels' 18 trips to the Final Four and 17 ACC Tournament Championships. You'll also get a look at the locker room and inside the huddle.
After that, you can explore the 8,000 square foot facility's tribute to 98 years of Carolina Basketball. With clothing worn by former players, Roy Williams' college textbooks, trophies and a note card reminding a member of the coaching staff to visit Wilmington to check out a high schooler named Mike Jordan, the museum has it all. There is even a March Madness room that features game balls, footage and other memorabilia from National Championship games.
Next time you are in the neighborhood, you have to check out the museum that is every Tar Heel fan's dream.
