For a taste of Kentucky’s varied and distinct music, mark your calendar for Friday, Feb. 26, when critically acclaimed natives Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore will take the stage at the Brown Theatre in Louisville.
The duo will be performing from their new album, Dear Companion, produced by another Kentucky native, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. With the new release, the three hope to shed light on the impact of mountaintop removal, a form of coal mining that blasts the tops off mountains and dumps leftover rock in valleys, burying streams and wreaking havoc on coalfield communities. A portion of the proceeds from Dear Companion will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal and finding a better way forward.
The album features a largely folk-inspired sound, marked by the “completely original styling of Sollee's cello and the masterful guitar playing of Moore,” according to author and activist Silas House’s review in the Courier-Journal.
Moore, a former Peace Corps volunteer, has emerged as one of the most beautiful voices in modern folk. Sollee is known for his groundbreaking work as a cellist, initiating its use in folk music, as well as taking his show on the road via bicycle to advocate greener living.
