Former winter resort for the wealthy now a picturesque private college campus overlooking downtown Tampa

by Mary Lou Janson | March 01, 2010

Many marvel at the Moorish-flourished, minaret-topped structure that stands grandly along the riverbanks of downtown Tampa.  The University of Tampa is more than a landmark—it’s also a leading private college attracting students worldwide who seek classes taught by full professors and value proximity to a vibrant business district - and the internship opportunities that access affords.

First built as a 500-room winter retreat for the well-to-do, the former hotel cost $3 million to build and furnish, no small sum for 1891. The iconic structure remains well maintained and well used, for administrative offices to special events, and one wing houses the Henry B. Plant Museum that faithfully recreates the look of guestrooms and lifestyle from the Gilded Age.

Everything from fitness facilities, dining spots and a Barnes & Noble bookstore make campus life complete, but only a brisk walk or a brief bus, cab or streetcar ride transports students to the St. Pete Times Forum for concerts, movies at Channelside or Hyde Park Village’s CineBistro and cultural experiences at the Tampa Museum of Art and Straz Performing Arts Center.  Between classes students are most likely to be sunning in Plant Park or running along Bayshore Boulevard.
